Without doubt we are contributing to climate change as well as the rate of extinctions (which just happens to be the worst rate ever), and for some reason we seem to continue in the arguement instead of just making some changes in our lives.
What struck me as interesting was Mark's plea for voters to elect those politicians that promise to act in the best interest of humans by balancing our interactions with our environment.
Listen to Mark's comments and respond to any of his statements as a comment using the word CLIMATE CHANGE as our tag.

Episode 94 George Stroumboulopoulos, CBC
I feel Mark Hertgaard is a smart man, he knows what he's talking about, and I agree with Mark's cause. That being said I feel he is also very arrogant about how he presents himself, and his message about climate change. He referred to the republican party as "flat-earthers" which is commonly used to refer to an individual who stubbornly adheres to discredited or outmoded ideas, although, I agree with him, it is a stereotype, which makes him come off as arrogant. Another example is when he said that "I would like to know the name of a smart person, who disputes ma-mainstream science on climate change." There was one thing that he said that really stuck with me, and really hit home for me. It was the quote where he was talking about governments and how they are resitant to stop or cut down on oil production in canada, we rely on oil as a large part of our income in canada, and it is a large part of our prosperity as a country, and Mark said "its like relying on a drug that slowly kills you, we have got to get off this drug." After hearing that I was just in awe, I was wowed. In closing, I think that his message is one that needs to be taken in and thought about seriously, but I also think he could present himself in a less arrogant fashion.
ReplyDeleteP.S. On a completely unrelated note, I'd like to share a video with you on evolution, you were talking about evolution to a student in class yesterday and it made me think of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK3O6KYPmEw , enjoy.
Thanks for your thoughts and video. I suppose several people may easily stereotype Mark but I agree that his message is worth consideration and action.
ReplyDeleteIn the video he provides some very interesting evidence supporting that we did have 24 pairs at one time. Why don't chromosome pairs increase? Surely it must have happen before. In 1994 I wrote a paper for my Cell Biology professor that the Y chromosome was a mutated X chromosome. HE didn't agree.
this guy seems just a little bit arogant.. i dnt like him. he thinks he is right.. but has he ever thought about that mayb we can stop it.. fix it or slow it down.. i dnt think we can just automaticaly fix wht has begun just like he said. but 50 years of climate change? why cant we just get off our buts and stop poluting and treating our earth like garbage. we need to help our earth or its just gonna get worst. this guy is one of the people trying to get the word out. i am happy someone is focusing on it.
